ABC’s First School Project – Primary School in Laos

Posted on October 2nd, by ABC admin in projects. No Comments

In 2009, a 4 room Primary school in Phiangdokkam, (Northern) Laos was inaugurated thanks to the AlphaBet Club funding Room to Read Foundation. This is the first educational infrastructure project that the ABC funded, and we’re pleased with how the project turned out and the impact that it had on children in the local community.

The building took five months to complete with labor provided by 1,200 volunteers from the community and was ready for use on October 2, 2009: it serves 172 students in grades 1 – 5. This building replaced the old school, a building that was in poor condition, made of wood and bamboo with sheet metal roofs and dirt floors. The new building covers an area of 28m long x 8m wide and is a sturdy, four room brick structure erected on a concrete foundation, with steel-reinforced ground and roof … Read more »

Ten years of girls’ education in Vietnam

Posted on March 1st, by ABC admin in projects. 3 comments

ABC  has sponsored a Vietnamese girl to attend primary and secondary school at a  Room to Read school in her village. This sponsorship began this year and covers 10 years of her studies through primary and secondary school. Room to Read does not share any specific  information on children sponsored but does offer a great report of their educational sponsorship program.

“Economics, cultural bias and gender discrimination often exclude girls from educational opportunities in the developing world. Yet, it  is widely acknowledged that educating girls is the most powerful and effective  way to address global poverty – and the single best investment one can make. When  girls learn, their families, communities and societies all benefit. Educating  girls is directly linked to positive outcomes, including:

Lower infant mortality rates
Increased eventual wages
Increased likelihood of educating the next generation
Improved family health
Success in combating the spread … Read more »
